Pem Cell Components
PEM Fuel Cells generate electricity by combining Hydrogen and Oxygen (opposite principle of electrolysis). They are made up of several sophisticated components such as metallic or graphitic BPP (Bipolar Plate), GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) and CCM (Catalyst Coated membrane) assembled into MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly).
Each component has specific functions and their handling and assembly require proper inspection and measurement procedures to achieve the perfect functionality.
The expected fast growth in production volumes entails greater integration with in-line process control techniques in order to guarantee product quality and avoid reworking of finished component.
Long-term Marposs experience in the process monitoring and in-line control is applied to the manufacturing of Fuel Cells, with the development of tailored solutions to check the integrity, dimension and functionality of all FC components, in order to prevent the assembly of defective parts, that would negatively affect the final quality of the stack.
- Sensors for process monitoring in the stamping operations of metallic BPP
- Leak testing of the BPP
- Gauging and inspection of the BPP
- Film thickness measurement
- Electrical testing
