Optical Inspection For Defects Detection On Casted Parts
One of the most important aspects in the production of parts resulting from casting processes is leakage control. The traditional leak testing allows the verification of the water, oil, fuel, and all the circuits present on the casting parts except the sealing surfaces where gaskets must be applied for coupling with other parts surfaces. The presence of defects, such as porosity, on these surfaces can generate leaks on the sealing surfaces leading to the malfunctioning of the finished product.

The proposed solution, a non-contact measuring system (Machine Vision), is able to detect the presence of casting defects on the sealing surfaces. Using a suitable number of fixed or robot-operated high-resolution cameras, the most important sections of the component are tested in order to detect the presence of the defects, measure the Feret diameter of each defect, detect the distance from the adjacent ones and determine the density of defects on the surface to be inspected. The inspection can be applied on every kind of housing from the engine block, of a traditional combustion engine, to the housing of the EDU units for electric vehicle.
