Special Contact Gauging of Rotor Components

Compliance with the quality standards required in the mass production of a critical component such as the rotor of traction electric motors, presupposes that the part is checked after all machining operations with appropriate post-process gauging applications, both in the machine and off-line.

Special contact gauging of rotor components
DESCRIPTION

The use of customized applications based on contact electronic technologies guarantees the maximum accuracy, reliability and reduced cycle time that are typically required for the harsh environmental conditions of in-line post-process gauging.

Different gauging solutions can be required, depending on the type of rotor:

  • Permanent magnets rotor, for brushless synchronous motors
  • Wound rotors, for externally excited synchronous motors
  • Squirrel cage rotors, for asynchronous motors

In the machining of the rotor shaft, the contact solution allows the measurement with maximum accuracy of diameter and roundness on the bearing support collars. Configurations with a floating and self-centering master gear are used to detect radial single-ball dimension (MdR) and runout of the spline, both internal and external, with respect to the bearing axis.

The post-process control of the sheet-metal stack assembly after the turning operation, is a pre-condition to guarantee the correct next assembly operation to the rotor shaft.

The final quality check, before or after balancing, in-line or off-line, is used to control the sheet-metal stack run-out, necessary condition to minimize the airgap in the next assembly operation to the stator and motor housing.

BENEFITS
  • Minimum cycle time for in-line control in mass production
  • Higher insensitivity to the presence of coolant or dirt
  • Measurement of true roundness on the bearing support collars
  • Dynamic measurement of the spline run-out
  • Built according to customer’s specifications
  • Robust construction
